Planning notes
The 2026–2027 District student calendar school calendar begins Aug 13, 2026 and ends May 27, 2027.
This is an independent student-calendar reference, not a Hays CISD website. Confirm weather make-up attendance, individual UIL eligibility and campus-specific plans with the district or your school.
School schedules
No elementary early-release days are listed.
Early release applies on December 17, 2026 and May 27, 2027.
High schools have two finals days and one grades 6–12 early-release day at the end of each semester.
Editorial summary
Hays Consolidated Independent School District begins the 2026-2027 school year Thursday, August 13, 2026, and ends Thursday, May 27, 2027. The adopted calendar includes 169 student days. Under its District of Innovation plan, Hays can start classes earlier in August and finish before Memorial Day.
The calendar does not designate a separate Fall Break. Students have two extended stretches without classes: October 9–12 and October 30–November 3. The second includes a staff exchange day and Election Day, when some campuses may be needed as polling places. Thanksgiving break runs November 23–27, with students returning November 30.
Students have 19 consecutive days without regular classes from December 18 through January 5. That stretch combines winter holidays, weekends and staff workdays. Classes resume Wednesday, January 6, 2027.
Early dismissal depends on grade level. High schools dismiss at 1 p.m. on December 15–17 and May 25–27. Middle schools dismiss at 2 p.m. only on December 17 and May 27. Elementary schools have no scheduled early-release days and keep their regular 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m. hours.
Spring Break is March 15–19, matching the weekday portion of UT Austin's March 15–20 break. This alignment helps Hays students taking dual-credit courses. February 12 and April 30 are also listed as weather make-up dates. Although both are scheduled as student holidays, either may become a school day if make-up classes are needed.
Common questions
Hays CISD students start school Thursday, August 13, 2026. The first nine-week grading period begins that day.
Thursday, May 27, 2027, is the last day of school. Grades 6–12 have early release; elementary schools keep their regular schedule.
The calendar lists 169 student days: 79 in the first semester and 90 in the second. The separate 187-day figure is for teachers, not students.
No. Monday, September 7, 2026, is listed as a student/staff holiday.
The adopted calendar does not name a separate Fall Break. Students have a four-day weekend October 9–12, 2026, and a five-day stretch without regular classes October 30–November 3. Staff workdays, a staff exchange day and holidays create these breaks; classes resume October 13 and November 4, respectively.
No. Friday, October 30, 2026, is a staff workday/student holiday. Together with the weekend and the November 2–November 3 student holidays, it creates five consecutive days without regular classes.
No. Tuesday, November 3, 2026, is a staff workday/student holiday. The preceding Monday, November 2, is also a student holiday for a staff exchange day. Hays keeps students off on Election Day because campuses may be needed as polling places.
Students have no classes on Monday, November 2, 2026. Hays CISD designates this as a staff exchange day, when the district is generally closed and some staff services may be limited.
No. Regular classes are scheduled for November 11, 2026. Hays CISD keeps Veterans Day as a school day so campuses can hold events honoring veterans.
Students are off November 23–November 27, 2026. Classes resume Monday, November 30, 2026.
The winter student/staff holidays are December 21, 2026–January 1, 2027. December 18, 2026 and January 4–January 5 are separate staff workdays with no student classes. Classes resume January 6, 2027.
Classes resume Wednesday, January 6, 2027. This is the start of the third nine-week grading period.
Students have 19 consecutive calendar days without regular classes, December 18, 2026–January 5, 2027, including weekends. That stretch combines the winter holidays with separate no-student workdays; it is longer than the holiday range alone.
No. January 4–5 are staff workdays/student holidays. Students return Wednesday, January 6, 2027.
Yes. Monday, January 18, 2027, is a student/staff holiday, with classes scheduled to resume the following day.
No. Monday, February 15, 2027, is marked as a student/staff holiday. The preceding Friday, February 12, is conditional because it may be needed for weather make-up classes.
February 12, 2027 and April 30, 2027 are reserved weather make-up dates. Both are also scheduled as staff workdays/student holidays. The PDF says to check district notices because make-up classes may not be necessary.
Students are off March 15–March 19, 2027, for the spring student/staff holidays. The preceding Friday, March 12, is a regular student day and grading-period end.
Classes resume Monday, March 22, 2027, when the fourth nine-week grading period begins.
No. Friday, March 26, 2027, is a student/staff holiday. It falls on Good Friday, although the academic calendar uses the generic holiday label.
No. Monday, March 29, 2027, is a staff workday/student holiday. Students return Tuesday, March 30, after the March 26 holiday, weekend and March 29 workday.
Yes. Monday, May 3, 2027, is a student/staff holiday. The adopted calendar does not give a specific reason for the holiday. April 30 is a separate, conditional weather make-up day, so students should not assume both dates will be days off.
The confirmed in-year workdays are September 21, October 9, October 30, November 3, December 18, January 4, January 5, March 29. November 2 is a separate staff exchange day. February 12 and April 30 are not additional guaranteed days off; both may become weather make-up days.
High schools have early release December 15–December 16, December 17, May 25–May 26 and May 27. Middle schools have early release only December 17 and May 27. Elementary schools have no early-release days.
Middle schools dismiss at 2 p.m. on their scheduled early-release dates, and high schools dismiss at 1 p.m. Elementary schools still finish at 3 p.m.; secondary early release does not apply to them.
No. The PDF explicitly lists no elementary early-release days. Elementary students follow the regular 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m. schedule, including the semester-ending days.
The annual PDF lists elementary schools at 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m., middle schools at 8:10 a.m.–3:45 p.m., and high schools at 8:55 a.m.–4:25 p.m. Early-release schedules are separate and apply only on the designated secondary dates.
The second grading period ends Thursday, December 17, 2026, before the winter holidays. Grades 6–12 have early release that day; December 18 is a staff workday with no student classes.
The four periods are August 13–October 8, October 13–December 17, January 6–March 12 and March 22–May 27. These are grading boundaries, not separate holidays.
Report cards for grades 6–12 are scheduled for October 14, 2026; January 12 and March 25, 2027; and June 4, 2027. The final report comes after the last day of classes and does not add another school day. These dates do not represent the elementary report-card schedule.
For grades 6–12, the first progress report is issued September 11, 2026, followed by the six-week eligibility report September 24. Combined eligibility/progress reports are scheduled for November 4 and December 4, 2026; and January 28, February 17, April 15 and May 5, 2027.
September 18, 2026 is the six-week cutoff for grades 6–12. The eligibility report is issued September 24, and the chart lists possible loss or regain of eligibility on September 25. Individual eligibility depends on the student's record.
For grades 6–12, the chart lists regain dates on November 5, 2026, December 7, 2026, January 29, 2027, February 18, 2027, April 16, 2027, May 6, 2027. Report-card reviews may involve losing or regaining eligibility on October 15, 2026, January 13, 2027, March 29, 2027. The first six-week review is September 25, 2026; its regain provision applies to students who did not earn the required credits. Confirm individual status with the campus.
The academic calendar does not list STAAR or TELPAS test dates. Hays CISD's Student Assessment page links a separate 2026-2027 Assessment Calendar. Use the testing schedule for your child's grades and subjects; the UIL chart is not an exam calendar.
The academic calendar does not list graduation ceremony dates. Hays CISD's Graduation 2027 page lists Johnson High School on June 1 at 1 p.m., Live Oak Academy on June 1 at 6 p.m., Hays High School on June 2 at 1 p.m., and Lehman High School on June 2 at 6 p.m. All four ceremonies are at Strahan Arena at Texas State University. Check the district page for updates.
The district's Bad Weather Protocols list website alerts, district social media, parent phone/text/email messages and local news media. Parent calls are made only when the normal schedule changes. Check those district updates rather than treating a reserved make-up date as automatically activated.
The district's When & Where page links the 2026-2027 Academic Calendar PDF under Academic Calendars. The two-page document includes the student calendar, grades 6–12 UIL eligibility chart and bell schedules.
Yes. The UIL chart says its dates may change if inclement weather closes school. The two reserved make-up dates also require district confirmation; use any updated district schedule rather than relying only on a saved PDF.
Its District of Innovation plan allows an earlier August start, helping the school year end before Memorial Day.
Hays uses the same buses for elementary, middle and high school routes. Staggered bell times let the fleet serve each group in turn.
Yes. The Board adopted the 2026-2027 academic calendar on November 17, 2025. The district's current calendar page lists it as adopted; the UIL chart was added January 8, 2026.
Yes. Hays CISD Spring Break is March 15–19, 2027, while UT Austin lists March 15–20. The weekday dates align, helping Hays students enrolled in dual-credit courses take their break at the same time.
February 12, 2027, is scheduled as a student holiday but is also a reserved weather make-up day. Hays CISD may require attendance if make-up classes are needed. Check district notices before treating it as a confirmed day off.
April 30, 2027, is normally a student holiday, but it is also a reserved weather make-up date. Hays CISD may require attendance if make-up classes are needed. May 3 remains a separate student/staff holiday; check district notices before planning a four-day weekend.
The calendar designates December 15–16, 2026, and May 25–26, 2027, as high-school-only early-release days for finals. High schools dismiss at 1 p.m. on those dates. December 17 and May 27 are separate early-release dates for grades 6–12.
Yes. The adopted calendar lists 169 student days, including scheduled early-release dates. High and middle schools have shorter hours on designated dates, while elementary schools follow their regular schedule.

Source and scope
The district's Academic Calendars section links the adopted 2026-2027 PDF. Its first page gives student holidays, workdays, early-release dates and grading boundaries; its second page contains the grades 6–12 UIL eligibility chart and school-level bell schedules.
Official dates and source labels are retained separately from normalized display names. Contiguous source ranges stay separate from longer family-planning breaks assembled with weekends and adjacent workdays. Conditional weather dates are excluded from confirmed closure counts. Finals and early-release scope is preserved: high school only on the two preceding finals days, grades 6–12 on semester-ending dates, and no elementary early release. Staff-only preparation and post-year employee work/exchange days are excluded. Teacher grades-online deadlines are not student events; report-issued and eligibility-affected dates remain grade-scoped milestones, not closures or examinations. The final report card is included after the last class day without extending the attendance year.
Both PDFs state adoption by the Hays CISD Board on November 17, 2025. The district page says they were published in November 2025 and that the UIL charts were added January 8, 2026. No exact publication day or later adoption date is inferred. Check the district's current PDF and weather notices for subsequent changes.
