Planning notes
The 2027–2028 District student calendar school calendar begins Aug 12, 2027 and ends May 24, 2028.
This is an independent student-calendar reference, not a Hays CISD website. Confirm weather make-up attendance, individual UIL eligibility and campus-specific plans with the district or your school.
School schedules
No elementary early-release days are listed.
Early release applies on December 16, 2027 and May 24, 2028.
High schools have two finals days and one grades 6–12 early-release day at the end of each semester.
Editorial summary
Hays CISD's 2027-2028 school year begins Thursday, August 12, 2027, and ends Wednesday, May 24, 2028, with 169 student days. The early August start is possible under its District of Innovation plan, allowing the year to end before Memorial Day.
Elementary, middle and high schools follow different daily schedules because Hays uses the same bus fleet for routes at all three levels. High schools dismiss at 1 p.m. on December 14–16 and May 22–24. Middle schools dismiss at 2 p.m. only on December 16 and May 24, while elementary schools have no scheduled early-release days.
There is no separately named Fall Break, but students have October 8–11 and October 29–November 2 without regular classes. The second stretch includes November 1, the day after Halloween, and November 2, Election Day. Thanksgiving break runs November 22–26, with classes resuming November 29.
Winter holidays, weekends and staff workdays give students 20 consecutive days without regular classes, December 17–January 5. The winter holidays run December 20–31, followed by a separate student/staff holiday January 3 and staff workdays January 4–5. Classes resume Thursday, January 6, 2028.
Spring Break runs March 13–17, aligning with the weekday portion of UT Austin's March 13–18 break. April 14 is a student/staff holiday, but April 17 is reserved for possible weather make-up classes, so a four-day weekend is not guaranteed. February 18 is another conditional make-up date. The separate UIL chart lists the final grades 6–12 report card for June 2, after the last student day.
Common questions
Hays CISD students start school Thursday, August 12, 2027. The first nine-week grading period begins that day.
Wednesday, May 24, 2028, is the last day of school. Grades 6–12 have early release; elementary schools keep their regular schedule.
The calendar lists 169 student days: 79 in the first semester and 90 in the second. The separate 187-day figure is for teachers, not students.
No. Monday, September 6, 2027, is listed as a student/staff holiday.
The adopted calendar does not name a separate Fall Break. Students have a four-day weekend October 8–11, 2027, and five consecutive days without regular classes October 29–November 2. These stretches combine holidays, weekends and staff days; classes resume October 12 and November 3, respectively.
No. Friday, October 29, 2027, is a staff workday/student holiday. Together with the weekend and the November 1–November 2 student holidays, it creates five consecutive days without regular classes.
No. Tuesday, November 2, 2027, is a staff workday/student holiday. The preceding Monday, November 1, is also a student holiday for a staff exchange day. Hays keeps students off on Election Day because campuses may be needed as polling places.
Students have no classes on Monday, November 1, 2027. Hays CISD designates this as a staff exchange day, when the district is generally closed and some staff services may be limited.
No. Regular classes are scheduled for November 11, 2027. Hays CISD keeps Veterans Day as a school day so campuses can hold events honoring veterans.
Students are off November 22–November 26, 2027. Classes resume Monday, November 29, 2027.
The winter student/staff holidays are December 20, 2027–December 31, 2027. December 17, 2027 and January 4–January 5 are separate staff workdays with no student classes. January 3, 2028 is also a student/staff holiday. Classes resume January 6, 2028.
Classes resume Thursday, January 6, 2028. This is the start of the third nine-week grading period.
Students have 20 consecutive calendar days without regular classes, December 17, 2027–January 5, 2028, including weekends. That stretch combines the winter holidays with separate no-student workdays and the January 3 holiday; it is longer than the holiday range alone.
No. January 4–5 are staff workdays/student holidays. Students return Thursday, January 6, 2028.
Yes. Monday, January 17, 2028, is a student/staff holiday, with classes scheduled to resume the following day.
No. Monday, February 21, 2028, is marked as a student/staff holiday. The preceding Friday, February 18, is conditional because it may be needed for weather make-up classes.
February 18, 2028 and April 17, 2028 are reserved weather make-up dates. Both are also scheduled as staff workdays/student holidays. The PDF says to check district notices because make-up classes may not be necessary.
Students are off March 13–March 17, 2028, for the spring student/staff holidays. The preceding Friday, March 10, is a regular student day and grading-period end.
Classes resume Monday, March 20, 2028, when the fourth nine-week grading period begins.
No. Friday, April 14, 2028, is a student/staff holiday. It falls on Good Friday, although the academic calendar uses the generic holiday label.
April 17, 2028, is scheduled as a student holiday but may be used for weather make-up classes. Unlike the confirmed April 14 holiday, April 17 is conditional, not a guaranteed day off. Check Hays CISD notices before treating it as a day off.
No. Monday, January 3, 2028, is a student/staff holiday. January 4–5 are separate staff workdays, and students return Thursday, January 6.
The confirmed in-year workdays are September 20, October 8, October 29, November 2, December 17, January 4, January 5. November 1 is a separate staff exchange day. February 18 and April 17 are not additional guaranteed days off; both may become weather make-up days.
High schools have early release December 14–December 15, December 16, May 22–May 23 and May 24. Middle schools have early release only December 16 and May 24. Elementary schools have no early-release days.
Middle schools dismiss at 2 p.m. on their scheduled early-release dates, and high schools dismiss at 1 p.m. Elementary schools still finish at 3 p.m.; secondary early release does not apply to them.
No. The PDF explicitly lists no elementary early-release days. Elementary students follow the regular 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m. schedule, including the semester-ending days.
The annual PDF lists elementary schools at 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m., middle schools at 8:10 a.m.–3:45 p.m., and high schools at 8:55 a.m.–4:25 p.m. Early-release schedules are separate and apply only on the designated secondary dates.
The second grading period ends Thursday, December 16, 2027, before the winter holidays. Grades 6–12 have early release that day; December 17 is a staff workday with no student classes.
The four periods are August 12–October 7, October 12–December 16, January 6–March 10 and March 20–May 24. These are grading boundaries, not separate holidays.
Report cards for grades 6–12 are scheduled for October 13, 2027; January 12 and March 24, 2028; and June 2, 2028. The final report comes after the last day of classes and does not add another school day. These dates do not represent the elementary report-card schedule.
For grades 6–12, the first progress report is issued September 10, 2027, followed by the six-week eligibility report September 30. Combined eligibility/progress reports are scheduled for November 3 and December 3, 2027; and February 3, February 23, April 13 and May 4, 2028.
September 24, 2027 is the six-week cutoff for grades 6–12. The eligibility report is issued September 30, and the chart lists possible loss or regain of eligibility on October 1. Individual eligibility depends on the student's record.
For grades 6–12, the chart lists regain dates on November 4, 2027, December 6, 2027, February 4, 2028, February 24, 2028, April 14, 2028, May 5, 2028. Report-card reviews may involve losing or regaining eligibility on October 14, 2027, January 13, 2028, March 27, 2028. The first six-week review is October 1, 2027; its regain provision applies to students who did not earn the required credits. Confirm individual status with the campus.
The 2027-2028 academic calendar does not list STAAR or TELPAS dates. Check Hays CISD's Student Assessment page and your child's campus for the year-specific testing schedule when it is published; do not use the UIL eligibility chart as a test schedule.
The 2027-2028 academic calendar does not list graduation ceremony dates, times or venues. Check the district's Graduation page and your high school's announcements for the 2028 schedule; the last class day is not a ceremony date.
The district's Bad Weather Protocols list website alerts, district social media, parent phone/text/email messages and local news media. Parent calls are made only when the normal schedule changes. Check those district updates rather than treating a reserved make-up date as automatically activated.
The district's When & Where page links the 2027-2028 Academic Calendar PDF under Academic Calendars. The two-page document includes the student calendar, grades 6–12 UIL eligibility chart and bell schedules.
Yes. The UIL chart says its dates may change if inclement weather closes school. The two reserved make-up dates also require district confirmation; use any updated district schedule rather than relying only on a saved PDF.
Its District of Innovation plan allows an earlier August start, helping the school year end before Memorial Day.
Hays uses the same buses for elementary, middle and high school routes. Staggered bell times let the fleet serve each group in turn.
Yes. The Board adopted the 2027-2028 academic calendar on November 17, 2025. The district's current calendar page lists it as adopted; the UIL chart was added January 8, 2026.
Yes. Hays CISD Spring Break is March 13–17, 2028, while UT Austin lists March 13–18. The weekday dates align, helping Hays students enrolled in dual-credit courses take their break at the same time.
February 18, 2028, is scheduled as a student holiday but is also a reserved weather make-up day. Hays CISD may require attendance if make-up classes are needed. Check district notices before treating it as a confirmed day off.
High-school-only finals and early release are scheduled for December 14–15, 2027, and May 22–23, 2028. High schools dismiss at 1 p.m. on those dates. December 16 and May 24 are separate early-release dates for grades 6–12.
Yes. The adopted calendar lists 169 student days, including scheduled early-release dates. High and middle schools have shorter hours on designated dates, while elementary schools follow their regular schedule.
No. Monday, November 1, 2027, is a staff exchange day and student holiday. Students are also off October 29 and November 2, creating five consecutive days without regular classes from October 29 through November 2. Classes resume November 3.

Source and scope
The district's Academic Calendars section links the adopted 2027-2028 PDF. Its first page gives student holidays, workdays, early-release dates and grading boundaries; its second page contains the grades 6–12 UIL eligibility chart and school-level bell schedules.
Official dates and source labels are retained separately from normalized display names. Contiguous source ranges stay separate from longer family-planning breaks assembled with weekends and adjacent workdays. Conditional weather dates are excluded from confirmed closure counts. Finals and early-release scope is preserved: high school only on the two preceding finals days, grades 6–12 on semester-ending dates, and no elementary early release. Staff-only preparation and post-year employee work/exchange days are excluded. Teacher grades-online deadlines are not student events; report-issued and eligibility-affected dates remain grade-scoped milestones, not closures or examinations. The final report card is included after the last class day without extending the attendance year.
Both PDFs state adoption by the Hays CISD Board on November 17, 2025. The district page says they were published in November 2025 and that the UIL charts were added January 8, 2026. No exact publication day or later adoption date is inferred. Check the district's current PDF and weather notices for subsequent changes.
This is an independent student-calendar reference, not a Hays CISD website. Confirm weather make-up attendance, individual UIL eligibility and campus-specific plans with the district or your school.
