Editorial summary
Austin ISD revised the 2026-27 calendar in May 2026, increasing instructional days from 169 to 171. Students begin Tuesday, Aug. 18, and finish Thursday, May 27. Sept. 21 is a student holiday and PLED day, while Oct. 9 is listed as a student/staff holiday and possible bad-weather make-up day.
Fall break runs Nov. 23-27. Students are off Dec. 21-Jan. 4 and return Tuesday, Jan. 5; Jan. 4 is separately marked as a staff-development/student-holiday date. Parent-conference student holidays fall on Oct. 12 and Mar. 10, and spring break runs Mar. 15-19.
Mar. 26 is the calendar’s second possible bad-weather make-up day, and Apr. 30 is the second PLED/student holiday. The calendar also lists observances such as Yom Kippur, Diwali and Eid al-Fitr; an observance label does not by itself mean schools are closed.
Common questions
The first day of classes is Tuesday, August 18, 2026. New-teacher orientation, staff development, and teacher planning earlier in August are not student attendance days.
Students finish Thursday, May 27, 2027. May 28 is a teacher planning day after classes end, so it is not included as a student event.
Fall break runs Monday, November 23, through Friday, November 27, 2026. Students leave after classes November 20 and return Monday, November 30.
Students are off from December 21 through January 4 and return Tuesday, January 5. Austin ISD’s English Important Dates list includes January 4 in the Winter Break range, while the calendar grid and Spanish Important Dates list label January 4 separately as Staff Development / Student Holiday.
Spring break is Monday, March 15, through Friday, March 19, 2027. Classes resume Monday, March 22 unless the district announces a separate schedule change.
No. Both dates are labeled as student/staff holidays and bad-weather make-up days. If Austin ISD needs replacement instructional time, either date may become a required school day.
September 21 is a student holiday and PLED day, and the calendar also notes Yom Kippur. Students on the traditional calendar do not attend classes.
No. October 12 is a student holiday with elementary and secondary parent conferences and an Indigenous Peoples’ Day observance. Families should get their individual conference time from the campus.
No. November 2 is a student/staff holiday, and November 3 is a student holiday with campus staff development. Students return Wednesday, November 4.
No. February 15 is a student holiday and campus staff-development day on Austin ISD’s Traditional Calendar. ADSY campuses follow a different schedule and dismiss students early that day.
March 10 is a student holiday for elementary and secondary parent conferences, with Eid al-Fitr also noted on the calendar. Students do not attend regular classes.
April 30 is a student holiday and Austin ISD’s second PLED day of the school year. Classes are scheduled to resume Monday, May 3.
The four grading periods end October 8 and December 18, 2026, then March 12 and May 27, 2027. The fourth period ends on the final student day.
Austin ISD increased the calendar from 169 to 171 instructional days. The district says the May 2026 revision added one school day in October and another in February.
The revised traditional calendar has 171 instructional days. Austin ISD announced the increase from 169 days after the Board adopted the changes in May 2026.
PLED means Professional Learning Exchange Day. Eligible campus-based exempt staff can exchange 12 hours of qualifying professional learning completed outside the duty day for paid non-duty days on September 21 and April 30. Students on the traditional calendar do not attend classes on those dates.
No. Austin ISD calls November 23-27 Fall Break, and students on the traditional calendar do not have regular classes during that Monday-Friday week.

Source and scope
This page uses Austin ISD’s official 2026-2027 Calendar - Revised & Final PDF, district calendar page, May 2026 revision announcement, and PLED page, checked October 3, 2026. Together they document the student dates, 171-day revision, and the two Professional Learning Exchange Days.
Dates were checked against the English month grids, legend, and Important Dates list. Staff orientation and development before August 18, the May 28 teacher planning day, and holidays after May 27 were excluded because they do not interrupt the active student year. Adjacent no-school entries are combined only when the dates are continuous.
October 9 and March 26 are conditional and may become attendance days after bad weather. The PDF is also internally inconsistent about Winter Break: the English Important Dates list says December 21-January 4, while the calendar grid and Spanish Important Dates list show December 21-January 1 and mark January 4 separately as Staff Development / Student Holiday.
